Throughout the Space Age spacecraft have become increasingly sophisticated. At the same time, though, they have become larger and more expensive. This makes them vulnerable to on-orbit failures—losing a billion-dollar spacecraft because of a single subsystem malfunction—and also obsolescence, as it can years to develop such large “monolithic” satellites.
